Avatar

It is hard to know exactly what one should make of Avatar. The movie looks visually incredible, but it also looks more like a video game than a feature film (it even has a video game coming out simultaneously). The CGI is very well done, but too much of any good thing can be a bad thing. The ratio of real shots to CGI animation appears to be skewed in the CGI direction, which could be a little annoying to an audience. This, however, doesn't bother me as much as the fact that it is being released in 3-D. I might be the only one left, but I think 3-D is corny and ruins the artistic quality of films. There, I said it!!!!!
The story of Avatar is very interesting. At first, I thought that it was a real life adaptation of the Nickelodeon cartoon under the same title, then I thought it was about badass smurfs...I think it is about badass smurfs, but luckily there seems to be more to it than that. James Cameron seems to use an aspect in this film which I love to see done, which is, it is uncertain who the protagonists and antagonists are. At first it seems like the humans are the good guys for diplomatically trying to mine for resources on this planet; however, it alters eventually and seems like the indigenous creatures are the good guys trying to protect their planet. I've heard there is a love interest thrown in the mix as well...no comment.
After watching this trailer, I finally understood why the movie is called Avatar and I admit that it looks much better than I expected. Was it worth the $500 million it cost to make?...probably not, but it should still be entertaining to watch. Maybe not the next great breakthrough, but it should still be worth seeing.
